Chocolate- the Queen of Sweets

chocolateI just love weekends! It is great when you can sleep a little longer, and when you don’t have to rush about anything. Also, it’s usually weekends when I treat myself with different foods. And- definitely my favorite (and I don’t think anybody would argue this fact) is chocolate, or the queen of sweets, as I like to call it.

As most of you know, there are several types of this fantastic sweet-tasting treat. First, there’s pure, unsweetened chocolate which contains cocoa solids and cocoa butter in different proportions. The most consumed type of chocolate today is sweet chocolate, which is actually pure chocolate sweetened with sugar. Then, we have milk chocolate, which is made of chocolate and milk, and it is also sweet. White chocolate has milk and no cocoa solids, and it is also sweet. And finally, dark chocolate- which is the healthiest of all mentioned types.

While I mostly eat it because of the pleasure I get from eating it, chocolate is proved to have some benefits for health, so I’m now enjoying it even more. Chocolate contain some antioxidants which reduce the forming of free radicals. Also, it contains alkaloids, such as theobromine, which have some physiological effects. It increases the levels of serotonin in the brain. So, it is true that when we are sad, we should grab a chocolate bar. But, only one :-) Also, always chose dark chocolate for its higher flavonoid content.

Other benefits of chocolate are: anticancinogenic, then, it’s good in cough prevention, and also as an antidiarrhoeal. Some studies proved that daily intake of dark chocolate controls the blood pressure.

After all these positive sides of eating chocolate, I have to remind you that eating too much chocolate is really harmful. It leads to: obesity, increased levels of LDL, or “bad cholesterol”, dental caries, and many other problems. So, eat it moderately and you’ll avoid all those potential problems.
