Watermelon – the greatest summertime’s treat

Hello there!

I’m back from my holiday, I had a really great time and fun, and I’m still weeping for Kefalonian beaches and refreshing waters :-( But, it is really good to be home :-) Although it is very hot, and I don’t have the opportunity to jump in the sea and cool myself off, I have a way to refresh myself, and here’s how…

watermelon 1My summertime’s sweetest treat is definitely watermelon. This glorious fruit and vegetable at the same time, originates from Africa. Don’t know for you, but nothing can refresh me like watermelon.

I love it because it can be eaten in a variety of ways- as a fresh fruit, in numerous, delicious fruit salads, it can be squeezed into a fresh, luscious juice, or added to your favorite smoothies. I even like to mix it with yoghurt. Recipe is really simple. What you need for it is:

  • about 200ml of yoghurt,
  • a slice or two of watermelon (I leave it to your own taste),
  • and a bowl, for serving your delicates.

Preparation method is the simplest possible, believe me. Cut the watermelon, add yoghurt, stir it a little bit, and voilà- your dessert is ready to be eaten. I prefer this recipe as my snack, or even as a replacement for my dinner when I’m not so hungry, but I want to eat something to avoid getting up in the middle of the night, and rummaging through my fridge :-)

Here are some nutrition facts of watermelons. They are packed with some of the most valuable antioxidants, full with Vitamin C, Vitamin A- through its concentration of beta-carotene. Those ingredients are destroying free radicals in our organism, and we know that free radicals can cause cholesterol to stick to blood vessels, which can cause stroke or heart attack. Those are just few problems free radicals can cause, I do not intend to write on bad thins that can happen, no! I am advising you to eat watermelons and prevent all those and many other possible problems.

Also, recent studies have shown that watermelons are the greatest sources of carotenoid lycopene, even greater than tomatoes, and we know that lycopene has the ability to prevent cancers of stomach, prostate, and lung.

Watermelons are also full of vitamins, minerals, water, and have no saturated fats (only 0.15g per 100g) or cholesterol. They are also low in calories- around 30kcal per 100g, which makes them excellent for those who are watching their weight. Yes, they have around 7g of carbohydrates per 100g, but it will give you enough energy and it’ll also feed you, so you’ll make it to your next meal.

Watermelon-2So, next time you eat this delicious, luscious fruit, enjoy not only in its taste and sweetness, but in knowing how much it is beneficial for you.
